The English Channel G & T

Sifting through the internet is always entertaining. In our search we came across Split Tree and the recipes for cocktails they offered. Although we did not have any Split Tree brand ingredients, the ones we did have were all the same, and we decided to go ahead and make the cocktails anyway. Very pleasant ingredients for a magnificent Gin and Tonic!

0.25 oz of Absinthe
0.5 oz St. Germaine
0.5 oz Split Tree Tonic No.3
2 - 3 oz of soda water

The Sunset Cocktail

I know it is only mid week however this weekend the forecast is predicting a warm one, so a cocktail maybe in order. This tipple was one that my husband and I created over the weekend; The Sunset is a working title. This cloudy coral shot of Vitamin C reminded me of a lovely Canadian sunset, a beacon blazing and stretching across the evening sky.

The Sunset Cocktail
------------------------------------------------------------------------
the juice of 1 orange, freshly squeezed and strained
the juice of 2 lemons, freshly squeezed and strained
4 ounces of gin
a glug of simple syrup
a dash of Angostura Bitters
10 ml of Rose's Cranberry Twist Mix

Place all ingredient into a cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes. Shake and pour into a martini glass. Serve and enjoy!

Hope everyone is having a good week. It has been a busy Spring Break for us so far. - JD

Cassis and Soda

Unseasonably warm weather, again. Which are making the days quite enjoyable. Spring is almost here and this tipple is a modest reminder of such. Slight Pimms-ish, minus the fruit, although a garnish of fruit would dress it up proper. What I love about this beverage, besides the taste, is the gorgeous colour. The photo does do it some justice; it is a dark inky plum with undertones of amber. Sounds autumnal although the taste is fruity. Another simple refreshment.

Cassis and Soda
---------------------------------------------------------
about 2 ounces of Creme de Cassis
chilled Club Soda

Pour the Cassis into an old fashion or a high ball glass and then fill the glass half way or full, depends on your flavour strengths, with club soda. Garnish with slices of oranges.

Notes: This beverage is similar to a Cassisco except with that cocktail you add about 1 and 1/2 ounces of Triple Sec. Filling the glass to the brim with chilled Club Soda, doing some slightly fancy stirring and is served with ice cubes.

Blackthorn Cocktail

As you know Monday was Robert Burns Day and of course we had an evening tipple to toast the late Scottish poet. The Blackthorn Cocktail is a lovely sipping cocktail and may be enjoyed before or after dinner. Usually I am not one for whisky however the combination of flavours do work well here and produce an impressively smooth cocktail.

Blackthorn Cocktail
----------------------------------------------
ICE CUBES

2 ounces Scotch Whisky
1 ounce Sweet Vermouth
1/4 ounce Absinthe
3 dashes Angostura Bitters

lemon twist, for garnish

1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway full with ice cubes. Add the whisky, sweet vermouth, absinthe, and bitters. Shake well.

2. Strain into a cocktail glass. Twist the lemon twist over the glass and let it drop in.

It is as simple as that!

An Irish Whiskey would probably be fine too.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. We did! The past couple of days I have been battling this cold/flu virus that is going around. Feeling a bit better today which is a bonus although not 100 percent. - JD
