The Stork Club Cocktail

It has been awhile since posting about a cocktail and all within good reason. It is nice to leisurely sip on one as opposed to downing one. I have shared plenty of cocktails and I am unsure if these will return into what did become a regular Friday spot.

This classic cocktail is named after New York City's famed, Stork Club, which was in existence from 1929 until 1965 and apparently it was the place to be! This cool citrus cocktail is uplifting.

The Stork Club Cocktail
-----------------------------------------------------------
 makes 1 cocktail

1 1/2 oz gin
3/4 oz Cointreau
1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
dash of Angostura bitters
orange peel for garnish, if you wish

Combine the gin, Cointreau, orange juice and lime juice, and bitters in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with orange peel.

Journalist Martini

It is unclear as to when and where this cocktail was created however it is one of those classic cocktails which dates back to 1930, when it appeared in the Savoy Cocktail Book. To many it is the perfect martini due to the fact that it has equal parts of dry and sweet vermouth. Just a hint of citrus with a crisp, dry complexity that is unique. The Journalist is also known as the Periodista, which is Spanish for journalist.

Journalist Martini
-------------------------------------------
Makes 4 - 3oz martinis

8 oz Gin
1 oz Dry Vermouth
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz lime juice
1 dash bitters

Pour ingredients into a shaker with cracked ice and shake well. Strain into chilled martini glasses. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Kirsch Rickey

This is a lovely change of pace for a cocktail, the Kirsch Rickey. I have heard of a Gin Rickey however not necessarily a Kirsch Rickey. Still this cocktail will definitely have you dreaming of summer with it's fragrant tones and a fizz of sweet nectar; which would be most refreshing on a hot summer day... or night. If you prefer something a bit more dry you can exclude the simple syrup if you like and a touch more if needed. Although the recipe did not call for 2 maraschino cherries I decided to add them to each glass anyway.

Kirsch Rickey
----------------------------------------------------------
1/2 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice
2 ounces of Kirsch
1/4 to 1/2 ounce simple syrup, optional
ice cubes
chilled club soda

1. Add the lime juice, kirsch and simple syrup (if using) to a highball glass or any comparably sized glass. Stir.

2. Add 2 to 3 large ice cubes or a few smaller ice cubes to the glass. Top it off with club soda. Stir again. Serve with a stirrer or straw.

Notes: You can use freshly squeezed lemon juice instead of lime for an equally refreshing cocktail.
